A bar magnet is suspended by a thread attached to a wooden support. The bar magnet

hangs horizontally as shown and lines up with the Earth’s magnetic field.

State why the support should be made of wood and not steel.

Wood is not magnetisable/ferromagnetic allow ‘attracted’ reject ‘metal’

The magnet is rotated horizontally about its centre through approximately 20° from

its equilibrium position. When it is released it oscillates in a horizontal plane about

the string.

Describe how you would measure the period of these oscillations as accurately as

possible.

Max 3

Measure more than one T

Repeat for mean

Use of marker, must state where placed or that it helps in counting or

timing

Allow one other good physics technique in appropriate context

You are told that these oscillations are lightly damped.

State what you would observe if the oscillations were heavily damped.

Oscillations die away more quickly.

[Allow ref to amplitude but not speed. Allow a heavily damped response]

A large coil of wire is now placed vertically around the centre of the magnet.

When current is passed through the coil it produces a magnetic field in the

same direction as the Earth’s magnetic field. When the magnet is again rotated

horizontally, it oscillates at an increased frequency.

A student thinks that the period T of the oscillations is related to the current in

the coil I by

Links both axes with variables and y = mx (+c)

Or

Links k with gradient

States that variables are directly proportional or states that c = 0

The student carries out an experiment to measure T as I is varied. He obtains

the following data.

Use the grid opposite to draw a graph that would test the relationship

Use the column provided to show any processed data.

Data correct to 2/3DP with unit

His teacher suggests that the equation

is a better mathematical model for the data.

Explain why his teacher is right.

Max 2

Graph is a straight line

Graph does not pass through origin or c = b ≠ 0

magnet oscillates at zero current or one other good physics comment in

appropriate context
